Mullein(Verbascum Thapsus) is a member of the scrophulariaceae family. A heritage plant that has gained quite an admirable reputation for itself after being brought over from Europe by the early settlers and cultivated throughout North America. While offering many uses, this herb is also referred to as an invasive species showing how truly important it is to understand the environment around you and ask questions, there may be a reason a particular plant keeps showing up to you.

On our farm we cherish the experience when Mullein arrives and we watch many of the plants mature through their full two year life cycle bringing soft velvety greenery the first season followed by a generous amount of pollen for the bees from the flowering stem that can reach up to 7 feet tall in its second year. You can be certain each flower produces a bountiful pod filled with plenty of seed just to ensure their long lasting stay.

When the soft lushes leaves grow in clusters we cut them back followed by a thorough wash before being place on the dry rack. Once fully dried we process it down into loose leaf to be utilized however it is needed at the time. Around our home it is often enjoyed as tea or added to an herbal smoking blend.
